Fox News reported that the George Soros-backed district attorney was with his mother when they were carjacked by two suspects who allegedly pointed "high-powered automatic rifles" at them.
The incident happened during the evening hours on Monday, October 16th, with police saying that two armed suspects approached Williams' black Lincoln Navigator at around 10:00 p.m. on Race Street in the Lower Garden District.
After stealing the SUV, the suspects did not make it very far because Williams still had the key fob to the car on him. Police said that the SUV was recovered in the uptown portion of New Orleans.
Spokesperson Keith Lampkin confirmed that Williams and his mother were carjacked at gunpoint as he was helping her into the car. Lampkin said, "DA Williams and his mother were unharmed, and both thank the [New Orleans Police Department] for their hard work tonight and every night responding to crime victims."
The day after the incident, FOX 8 interviewed Williams at his office. Williams said that the two suspects did not appear to be juveniles and that they had high-powered automatic weapons.
He also said that they took items from the SUV, including some of his mother's belongings; he did not mention specifics. He said, "I think it's important to reiterate that my mother and I are just a small fraction of the number of people impacted by violence in this city. We have to collectively work on crime-prevention efforts, policing efforts and our prosecution efforts."
Police said that the same suspects were also accused of carjacking a 22-year-old woman barely 30 minutes after Williams and it was less than a half-mile away.
If and when arrests are made in connection to the incident, Williams said that he plans to recuse himself as well as his office. Instead, the criminal division of Attorney General Jeff Landry's office will take the case.
Months prior, Williams issued a "dire warning" against the surge in violent crime in New Orleans and across the country. He discussed how to "mitigate" the record-high violence and offered suggestions on what could be done to lower crime rates.
He said, "I am quoted as saying Rome is burning and that is not meant to be hyperbolic ... I've been ringing this alarm for over a year now. Not just in New Orleans, but in its entire country. Uvalde, Nashville, Tennessee, Midtown Atlanta yesterday, Cleveland, Texas last week."
He added, "This pandemic of violence is not confined to New Orleans' borders, but this is the area that I am focused on. This is where my family lives and the level of repeated violence is unparalleled and we need national and local responses to it."
While his comments are not untrue, many blame Williams' "selective prosecutions" as one of the reasons for the violence.
Williams ran on a platform of social justice reform with intentions of finding "alternatives to incarceration" for certain criminals, while simultaneously changing what he considered an "ineffective and unfair cash bail system."
According to reports, one of Williams' campaign backers, billionaire Democratic donor George Soros allegedly donated $220,000 to the Louisiana Justice and Public Safety PAC during 2020, which helped fund ad campaigns against Williams' opponent.
After being sworn in, Williams, said, "Being more selective about prosecutions will allow us to focus on the crimes that matter most to all of us. We've got to go beyond punishment and invest in our community."
Data from an analysis done by the Metropolitan Crime Commission show that Williams' tactics have resulted in a "drastic decline in accountability for violent felony offenders."
During his first few months in office, Williams' dismissed 937 of the city's 1,411 violent felony cases. Specifically, "52 percent of felony weapons cases were dismissed and felony criminal damage cases were dismissed at a rate of 94 percent between 1/11/2021 - 9/10/2021, compared with a 13 percent dismissal rate in 2019 and zero dismissals in 2020."
