Cassandra, I think that the tone of your response seemed condescending to many of us. In general it’s better to avoid statements like “You do realize that….” which always implies that the person does NOT realize that, and is quite insulting.
No one is “a little behind” on the possible contribution of AI in medicine. It seems that you are a huge amount ahead on what you think is possible. AI is a tool, but right now, it is the equivalent of a child’s toy hammer, not something that is of the incredibly sophisticated level that you suggest. Those who remember GIGO — “garbage in, garbage out” — merely need to look at the level of our understanding of biological processes and causes of disease, to “realize” that we can input mostly garbage rather than the data that would be needed to run a virtual drug trial.
How did VIagra become a blockbuster drug? Not for the purpose most people put it to now — but because it was being tried for heart disease and the investigators received reports from men in the clinical trials that it had a completely unexpected side effect.
