Never thought of doing it that way, old school as you call it, but that would work. I guess I always had a centrifuge, at least a hand crank but your way will work and work good. I agree that an operator should know what is in his tank at all times. We have some oil out here in the gulf that is 42 and 43 API with a very tight emulsion and 8% paraffin with a cloud point of 110 degrees and wellhead temp is 95 degrees with no downhole injection and without chemical and heat, you can't sell it. It is a crude, but I have seen condensate in the upper 40's that needed chemical and heat for good separation.
