I was stationed aboard an LST, which for those of you who don't know is an amphibious assault ship, one of those things that runs a ramp out onto the beach, so Marines can drive their little tanks and shit onto the beach without getting wet.
As it happens, I was the senior electrician on board. The way we kept the ramp from getting fouled up by the ship moving was a thing called a bow thruster. It's an electric motor with propeller vanes around it, and it's completely submerged in the water.
But it's a sealed motor. The water can't get in. It uses electrical signals to adjust the pitch of the propeller vanes, even. And bow thrusters are used every day to help tie ships up at piers. Electric motors work just fine to move ships through the water, every day, without anyone getting electrocuted.
