Personalized Wellness
Building A Healthy Lifestyle
Let’s get personal! Do you think your estrogen or testosterone hormone levels are at the same level as what they were as a 21-year-old? Do you think you make the same amount of 2AG or anandamide as you did when you were 21 years old? I believe that the answer to both questions is no. However, the answer for most people to question one is “I Wish”!
The answer to the second question would be “Why Not”?
The first question is about our sex drive and our fight or flight hormonal synaptic system. The second question is about our ability to stay in neurotransmission BALANCE. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) system was discovered 30 years ago, and the medical community is just learning about it. The ECS is a unique biochemical signaling network of lipid ligands, receptors, and enzymes present in humans for our homeostatic biological functions. This ECS system performs a variety of essential homeostatic functions across a broad spectrum of biological processes from: relaxing, eating, sleeping, forgetting, and protecting. This ECS discovery completed the mapping of a scientific breakthrough that is similar in magnitude to the discovery of antibodies and blood transfusions in the twentieth century. It’s all about BALANCE!
The same concept prevails when we talk about the foods that we eat. Do you think that the nutritional aspect of our soil today is equal to our grandparents and great grandparents farming sojourn? I can answer that question, NO! Our soil has gone to dirt. And yet that old adage, “We Are What We Eat” is still truer than ever. So how do we keep that neurotransmission BALANCE?
The United States of America has had several different food pyramids developed over time that attempted to direct Americans to a healthy lifestyle. Most of these pyramids have been debunked and shown to be a product of the food industry whose interests do not align with consumer health! The state of sustainable agricultural crops is a subject for another time but of interest is another crop that was taken out of our agricultural fields 85 years ago! This crop is known as hemp and scientists have uncovered that it can play a major part in our question of BALANCE and a healthy lifestyle!
When we have stress, depression, PTSD, anxiety, and insomnia we are out of BALANCE. So, we have to make an on-demand request for those two biochemical signaling of 2AG and anandamide which our body makes on demand, if we have all the ingredients! There is no storage of these two critical substances for a rainy day and are only made on-demand, signaling ligands to keep us in homeostasis and BALANCE. This puts the ECS in full operational mode.
Overall, the exploration of terpenes and cannabinoids from the hemp plant in medical research holds significant promise for the development of novel treatment options. With their diverse therapeutic properties, these compounds offer exciting possibilities for addressing a wide range of health conditions.
Studies have shown that terpenes can enhance the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids, i.e., CBD, CBG, CBC through a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. This refers to the synergy between different compounds in the plant, amplifying their individual benefits when used together. In particular, terpenes have been found to influence the absorption and metabolism of cannabinoids, potentially increasing their bioavailability and efficacy for building a Healthy Lifestyle!
Researchers have identified specific terpenes, such as myrcene, linalool, and limonene, that exhibit unique therapeutic properties. For example, myrcene has been found to possess sedative and muscle relaxant effects, making it potentially useful for managing pain and insomnia along with sports recovery. Linalool, on the other hand, has shown anxiolytic and anti-convulsant properties, indicating its potential in the treatment of anxiety and seizure disorders. Other terpenes like limonene have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities, suggesting their potential as an adjunct therapy for various diseases.
This all leads to personalizing cannabinoid wellness. Just like one pill like aspirin does not work for everyone, one cannabinoid, and/or one terpene combination is not optimized for each malady outlined above. As our knowledge advances about the ECS, as a scientist we are working on formulating Personalized Wellness solutions. New research to maximize the benefit and understanding the entourage effect of this plant and how we use it to personalize our health is in the making.
What we do know is the aging is a decrease in the BALANCE OF TRANSMISSION secondary to oxidative stress, and the key to aging. With a new and exciting manufacturing process, we are extracting and formulating new combinations for Personalized Wellness in “A Daily Dose of Wellness” with VitaminCBD™!
The pharmaceutical industry has shied away from the medical cannabis space due the uncertainty in US regulations. Filling the vacuum in demand has been a myriad of marijuana and hemp processors with limited pharmaceutical knowledge, offering formulations in many forms. Examples of this include tinctures, gummies, pills, capsules… etc.
Most of these formulations boast a ‘full spectrum oil’ or ‘broad spectrum oil’. While these natural ‘cocktails’ do contain many medically and therapeutically beneficial compounds, by definition, they do not cater to specific patient or consumer needs. Cannabinoids and terpenes that are good for sleep are not the same as those recommended for focus. Those shown to be appetite suppressing are not the same as those that are appetite stimulants. Full spectrum oils may make sense as a nutritional supplement when there is no specific effect desired, otherwise, the logic falls apart. This is no different than being tired, and instead of coffee, drinking an alcohol/coffee mix. Or having trouble sleeping and drinking caffeinated tea. Some pharmaceuticals simply have counteracting effects.
It is time to pivot toward Personalized Wellness, where consumers can find targeted formulations to address individual needs. There are many different effects to be offered by the Cannabis sativa L. plant after the myriad of compounds is separated and identified. At Poseidon Innovations, Inc. we have developed processes for precision dosing. We now can create tinctures and other desirable products with exact cannabinoid and terpene ratios that specifically target sleep, sports recovery, bone health, marrow heath, and some mental health issues. We believe that this is the future, and we are just beginning! Based in Hermon, Maine, Poseidon Innovations manufactures specialty ingredients that facilitate precision dosing. Our products enable providers like VitaminCBD™ to supply patients with specific cannabinoid ratios to address specific health concerns. This is a significant and necessary step in helping individuals control their own Personalized Wellness.
