The Impact and Solution for Deforestation Sadly,
Post# of 17862

Sadly, deforestation is becoming a worldwide epidemic. The percentage of forested areas has decreased from 70% of the earth’s surface to just 30%, and it’s continuing to decline at an alarmingly fast rate. Why does it matter if we don’t LIVE near one of these forests? Because every day between 50 to 100 animals and plant species die because of deforestation. Many forests, that are continuing to be cleared every day, contain plants that are used as pharmaceutical products, and by destroying the forests it’s destroying invaluable medicines that are used to save lives and cure disease. And one of the most serious consequences of deforestation is climate change due to loss of trees. It’s evident and undisputed that deforestation is becoming increasingly problematic to our earth’s very existence.
Logging is one of the direct causes of deforestation. We don’t think the demand for timber will decrease, and that’s okay – we love and can’t deny the beauty, the strength and usefulness of wood. But we also know there is a better way to supply the market demand without destroying our earth and its precious resources. Underwater logging offers one of the solutions to the serious problem of deforestation; especially tropical deforestation of old-growth hardwood species and its influence on climate change. Every tree we harvest from the estimated 300 million trees flooded in over 50,000 man-made lakes and reservoirs covering over 80 million acres worldwide, is a tree not taken from our remaining living forests. With the ability today to recover one underwater tree in as little as five minutes or as many as 100 trees in an eight-hour shift, Hollund offers a real practical answer to providing eco-sensitive, high quality wood products in a truly sustainable manner.
