I hope that you optimists are correct. However, some years ago the FDA invited people who suffered from the disease which was at that time called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, to comment on their experiences with Hemisperx's drug Ampligen. The testimony from the patients was heart-rending -- descriptions of how terrible their lives were until they were in the Ampligen clinical trial. Patient after patient used the phrase "it gave me my life back."
The FDA then denied approval. Their rationale? The drug helped "only" 44% of the patients.
There is no approved drug that has ANY benefit for CFS.
The real reason they wouldn't approve the drug? Members of the panel hated the then-CEO.
