“These children know in their hearts and in their minds that slavery was evil,” he said.
“One of the main things about slavery, beyond the physical damage that it did to people of so many generations, was that it prevented people from becoming what they could have become,” he said.
“So what if you became a carpenter or a blacksmith or a good maid? Your chances of that were not determined by you, it was determined by somebody else. That’s not a rationalization for enslavement.”

Anything that a person is 'taught' while enslaved is for the sole purpose of robbing them of everything they have, up to and including their children and their lives. The second Standard of the African American strand of the curriculum: "Analyze events that involved or effected Africans from the founding of the nation until Reconstruction." The third Benchmark, "Examine the various duties and trades performed by slaves"; Benchmark Clarification 1: "Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit."
This clarifying statement is utterly decontexualized, with no reference regarding why or for whom said skills were taught in the first place. It is a glaring omission in any curriculum, much less one written in the United States. Regardless of whether it is an oversight (or heaven forbid, a loophole), the curriculum should be revised to reflect accurately the history that happened. Children should not learn that one learns skills in slavery as they would anywhere else; it teaches them to be morally blind to the suffering of human beings, to lack empathy for one another and for themselves.
According to NBC, DeSantis has a history degree from Yale. I sincerely doubt that educators at Yale were teaching DeSantis what he is trying to teach to Floridian school children. The guy needs to take his hate mongering and go back to Florida where people want to listen to the crap he's preaching.
Rewritten history to make the racists feel better about the severe brutality of slavery is NOT history; it's a lie - another lie - among many. Still trying to justify the Civil War more than a century and a half after the Confederacy lost the fight to continue to enslave human beings.
That is some deep-seated hate passed from one generation to the next. WE, AS A COUNTRY, DON't NEED THAT HATE MONGERING. Let's move on.
