Tomorrow, NMA President and CEO Hal P. Quinn will testify before Congress on crucial mining legislation – H.R. 761, the “National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act of 2013.” The legislation tackles one of the highest hurdles for domestic mining right now – permit delays – and we encourage you to join with him in urging your lawmakers to support this legislation.
The length, complexity and uncertainty of the permitting process are the primary reason investors give for not investing in U.S. minerals mining. In the U.S., the necessary government authorizations now take close to 10 years to secure, and we currently rely upon the rest of the world for its supply of many critical minerals.
In order to meet our nation's needs, we now import 100 percent of 19 key mineral materials and more than 50 percent of an additional 24.
