I do understand what Dr Dalton is saying. Most jobs people are told to fund 401ks and select from provided mutual funds and ETFs. They are not told that you can sign up for a personal directed account in your 401k that allows you to be able to buy funds and stocks outside of the given list that your company provides. And you would be surprised how many people don’t know anything about opening an individual brokerage account so that you can invest on your own. They believe saving for the future is only through 401k for retirement. Not many people are taught these things. Not because the majority of us in these forums have learned these things years ago, that doesn’t mean it’s a common practice. When I told my coworkers that I have a personal brokerage account and I buy individual stocks, they thought I was crazy and why would I do that. So I do understand where he is coming from.
