Police have identified the man arrested for probable cause murder in the crash that killed four young women and a teenage girl in Minneapolis on Friday night.
Derrick John Thompson, 27, of Brooklyn Park, is in custody at Hennepin County Jail after being treated for injuries sustained in the crash on Lake Street at around 10:20 p.m. Friday.
It's been widely reported that Thompson is the son of former Minnesota state lawmaker John Thompson, who was removed from the Minnesota DFL in 2021 after a controversy involving a traffic stop, and continued as an independent before he lost comprehensively in the DFL primary in August 2022.
Police suspect Derrick Thompson was the driver seen speeding in an SUV that exited I-35W at 31st Street before colliding at Lake Street with the vehicle carrying Sabiriin Ali, 17, Sahra Gesaade and Salma Abdikadir, both 20, and Sagal Hersi and Siham Adam, both 19.
The five friends had been returning home from Karmel Mall following an evening preparing for a friend's wedding on Saturday. All five were pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement on Monday, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said her office will be making a charging decision soon.
Derrick Thompson has a prior felony conviction from a 2018 hit-and-run that critically injured a woman in California, which happened while he was fleeing police.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2020, but the Star Tribune reports he qualified for early release. He also has a number of previous driving convictions in Minnesota that include driving with a revoked license, but the newspaper notes his license was reinstated in March.
The funeral for the five victims was held on Monday, with a prayer service hosted at Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington, before burial took place at the Garden of Eden Cemetery in Burnsville.
A fundraiser to help the families of the victim has raised more than $400,000.
