Psychedelic Cryptography Contest Winners Announced
The Psychedelic Cryptography (PsyCrypto) contest announced the winners of the psychedelic-themed derby and awarded cash prizes last week. Contestants had to create videos and encode the vidoes with hidden messages that could be decrypted by people who had taken psychedelics such as magic mushrooms (psilocybin), ayahuasca and LSD.
The contest was run by a nonprofit group called Qualia Research Institute (QRI) with the aim of showing the “specific information-processing advantages” of taking psychedelics.
VFX artist Raimonds Jermaks took first and second place in the video category for the videos “Can You See Us?” and “We are here. Let’s talk,” while Rūdolfs Balcers won third place for the video titled “The Key.”
Members of the nonprofits international phenomenologist network evaluated contest entries and judged the entries based on aesthetic value, effectiveness and specificity.
Psychedelics have enjoyed a niche following for decades despite being outlawed in most of the world due to their incredible mind-bending effects. People have long reported seeing vibrant colors and patterns after taking psychedelics, and no other class of drugs has been able to replicate their effects.
The recent contest asked contestants to replicate these effects by encoding messages that would only be visible while they were tripping on psychedelics. After analyzing the contest entries, judges found that the top three entries far surpassed all the others in terms of psychedelic cryptography effects.
QRI’s research director Andrés Gómez Emilsson said that the top three entries were the only ones that had such effects. He said that the panel of judges painstakingly analyzed each submission while on ayahuasca and mushrooms, but only the top entries had messages that could only be decoded while tripping on psychedelics.
Some judges noted that once they decoded these messages while on psychedelics, they were able to see the messages when sober. However, two judges said that they were completely unable to see the messages while sober even after decoding them during a psychedelic trip.
The top two contestants used an encoding method that involves using tracer effects to keep bright colors in the visual field for longer and then hiding messages in the visual fields. A mind on psychedelics would reconstruct images in the visual field to decode the hidden message, but all a sober line would see are squiggles and lines.
Now that the contest has proven that it is possible to hide messages that can only be decrypted while on psychedelics, Emilsson says that he expects a significant improvement in submissions next time.
