Why Adults May Develop Sudden Onset Eczema Atop
Post# of 104
Atopic dermatitis or eczema is a topical condition that causes patches of inflamed, dry and itchy skin. While it typically starts in childhood and becomes milder with age, some people can develop eczema as adults.
Eczema can occur due to a wide variety of reasons including low humidity, dry weather, skin products, detergents and soaps, stress and even certain fabrics. Genetics also makes some people more likely to have eczema, and those individuals have a higher chance of experiencing flare-ups in response to triggers such as skin products, hormonal changes and allergens.
Although it is irritating, atopic dermatitis is not life threatening and cannot be transmitted to other people.
Adults who don’t develop the condition during their childhood years can also experience eczema flare-ups later in life if they are exposed to certain triggers. Stress, for instance, is one of the primary causes of sudden onset eczema in adults. It triggers a flight-or-fight response in people, which usually leads to the production of stress hormones such as cortisol to help regulate the stress response.
However, continued exposure to stress hormones over a long period of time represses the immune system and boosts inflammation throughout the body, which can either trigger an eczema flare-up or worsen an already existing one.
Adults can also experience sudden onset eczema due to environmental triggers or allergens. Dry, cold weather, dampness and strong sunlight can all cause an adult to develop eczema or experience more severe symptoms if they already have the condition. Exposure to allergens such as pet hair, mold, dust mites or pollen can also cause a flare-up or exacerbate eczema symptoms, especially in adults with overly sensitive immune systems.
Certain hormones that are thought to interact with a specific type of immune cell can also increase the risk of developing eczema as an adult. Hormones such as progesterone, testosterone and estrogen may affect cells that are associated with eczema and lead to increased eczema symptoms.
Pregnant women and women on their periods are more likely to experience the condition as well, due to hormonal fluctuations in their bodies. Another common reason for sudden onset eczema during adulthood is the use of makeup and skin products. Certain chemicals used to make personal care products and cosmetics are known to trigger eczema. Additionally, exposure to chemicals in air pollutants commonly found in indoor heating systems and traffic can worsen eczema symptoms.
British Skin Foundation spokesperson and consultant dermatologist Dr. Derrick Phillips advises adults to see a doctor or dermatologist as soon as possible if they experience a sudden eczema flare-up to receive appropriate treatment. Those eczema treatments could include products from several companies, including Jupiter Wellness Inc. (NASDAQ: JUPW).
