Hair Loss in Women May Indicate Other Conditions
Post# of 104
Pattern hair loss is a common condition that affects men as well as millions of women. Losing hair can be caused by many things, ranging from stressful events to changes in an individual’s hormones. The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition that causes the hair to thin at the top of an individual’s scalp.
The condition may also indicate the presence of health issues, said Dr. Valerie Callender. Callender is a dermatology professor at the College of Medicine, Howard University and an expert at the American Academy of Dermatology.
In a recent academy news release, Callender provided information on the different variations of hair loss observed in females with darker skin. She also discussed the common conditions linked to hair loss and their therapy options. Callender emphasized that visiting the dermatologist as soon as one recognized hair loss signs could limit progression and help identify any underlying medical issues.
A common type of hair loss, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, triggers hair loss at the center of the scalp. This condition affects almost 15% of Black females. Early detection of this type of alopecia is important, as the condition destroys hair follicles and causes scarring. This makes it hard for hair to grow back, leading to permanent loss of hair.
Callender also explained that high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, acne and breast cancer were prevalent among Black females suffering from central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. She also noted that most women suffering from hair loss suffered from acne due to increased hormones. Callender added that hypertension as well as menopause were also common while hair loss in women progressed.
Treatment for central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia often includes topical steroid medication or corticosteroid injections and antibiotics, which offers patients pain relief and prevents the scars from worsening. Minoxidil is also a potential treatment for hair loss. This therapy reduces hair loss by strengthening the remaining hair strands and stimulating hair growth. While one can purchase products that contain this active ingredient the pharmacy, those in need of higher doses will need to visit a dermatologist for a prescription.
Callender stated that hair product ingredients were important, noting that some shampoos could dry hair out and cause breakage. Hair and shampoo products should include moisturizing ingredients such as jojoba oil, vitamin E and A, as well as shea butter.
In cases where treatments weren’t effective in preventing hair loss, the professor noted that transplants could be prescribed as a permanent solution by one’s dermatologist.
