Afeela, Honda and Sony worked together on a newly developed concept electric vehicle that was unveiled at the 2023 Sony CES conference held in Las Vegas. The Afeela car will be able to stream movies and play Playstation 5 games.
After signing an MOU to strengthen relationships within the mobility sector in March 2022, the joint venture, called Sony Honda Mobility, will create and develop a new electric vehicle named Afeela. Sony has continued to support this mobility drive since the 2020 debut of the Vision-S car concept. Although the concept was never realized, Afeela appears to have acquired Sony’s intentions to incorporate its many technologies either on the inside or outside of the car.
Leveraging Sony’s sensor expertise, the Afeela car concept has 45 cameras as well as sensors placed inside and outside the car, including some that are in a position to sense the driver’s status along with the car’s visual condition to prevent accidents. The Qualcomm technology will be used where the latest chassis, the Snapdragon Digital Chassis, will be utilized in order to realize next-generation mobility.
While on the other hand, the Unreal Engine graphics technology, which was used in the electric Hummer vehicle from General Motors, will be used to create the interfaces of the vehicle. And because of Sony, PS5 games will be able to be played in the Afeela car. In addition, the vehicle will offer many other user-friendly technologies, such as the ability to customize the display according to the driver’s preferences, just like the Spider-Man theme presentations that were demonstrated.
Preorders for Afeela will open in the first half of 2025 with actual sales starting in the same year, while the premier supply shipment to North America is planned to take place in the early spring of 2026 even though the company seems to be concentrating on making sales online. The new vehicle will be produced at Honda’s factory located in North America, where it will also have level 3 self-driving capabilities with the ability to incorporate outside media into the inside cabin experience. Between zero and five, there are six levels of autonomous car capabilities where the third level allows detection in the environment and some discretion when decisions are being made.
Sony also intends to investigate the viability of integrating cloud gaming into Afeela, working together with Epic Games and its Unreal Engine. Epic will work with Sony Honda Mobility Company to enhance the virtual reality and augmented reality driving experiences. In addition, Epic noted that in the age of autonomous driving, customers are becoming more interested in the entertainment options and information available inside the vehicle. As a result, the Unreal Engine is being created while taking into consideration futuristic car driving experiences.
As Sony and Honda take auto electronics a notch higher, other players such as Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) will focus on their own unique selling points in order to keep making a mark on the market.
