The mRNA shot stops the immune system from ignoring the virus and allows a quick much smaller reaction to take care of the protein invader. It has kept the major majority of recipients from having a major immune reaction and staying out of the hospital. The virus if allowed will hide in our ace2 receptors and infiltrate our whole body and by the time the immune system without a vaccine shot or booster recognizes the virus the immune response is huge. Then it attacks and causes inflammation in your respiratory system effectively drowning you in your own lung fluid from that inflammation.
