Mental Health and CBD Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
Post# of 4861
Cannabis sativa L, whose flowers are also known as marijuana or marihuana, is a recreational plant that contains many chemicals that are constantly being studied by scientists around the world. One of these substances is cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychogenic cannabinoid which does not make you high. CBD has gained widespread popularity on the Internet as a treatment for mental health problems, leading many people to use CBD to self-treat depression and anxiety. In a recent clinical study, only 19% of the respondents consulted their doctor or pharmacist about taking CBD. In the group of psychiatric patients, only 49% of respondents tell their psychiatrist about using the compound. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.
A majority of the respondents (57%) in this above study were currently under the supervision of a psychiatrist, and a little over half (51%) did not tell their psychiatrists about their use of CBD. That 70-year-old stigma of criminalization of cannabis still pushes the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. CBD use can be found within people from all walks of life, and due to public interest, there is a need for education and research on the efficacy and safety of CBD use for mental disorders. “Do Ask, and Do Tell”.
Health and Human Services (HHS) of the United States Government has held a patent on CBD since 2003. This patent had neurogenic brain disease at the epicenter of this discovery. I shall summarize some of the science surrounding the utilization of CBD and dementia.
In 1999, four NIH researchers applied for a patent because they found CBD was neuroprotective, neuroproliferative and a great antioxidant to fight oxidative stress and free radicals in the brain. One of those four researchers was a Noble Prize winner for the discovery of the serotonin extender, Prozac, by Dr. Julius Axelrod in 1970 which has been used for depression over the last 50 years. This 1999 patent request was granted as Patent US6630507B1 by the United States Patent Office (USPO) in 2003. The Department of Health and Human Services who hold the patent, “Didn’t Ask, or Tell” the public because cannabis was labeled as a Schedule 1 drug that did not have medical or medicinal purpose. They simply did not ask or recognize the truth.
The author considers, through his research, CBD as a necessary supplement which would fall within the vitamin category. The author has defined CBD as a vitamin of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Vitamin CBD™ is a natural chemical derived from the cannabis plant.
The compound belongs to a classification known as cannabinoids, which are found both in cannabis (phytocannabinoids) and the human body (endocannabinoids, i.e., anandamide and 2AG). Vitamin CBDTM has become incredibly well known in recent years for its ability to assist in the treatment of symptoms of an entire host of illnesses and health conditions as outlined above. This is commonly referred to as body balance or homeostasis between mind and body.
Of particular interest are the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anti-convulsant actions of this cannabinoid known as CBD. Vitamin CBDTM is a more potent neuroprotective antioxidant than both Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Higher doses of the cannabinoid are postulated to be therapeutic for various psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and dementia. Research in the areas of diabetes and nausea also shows potential.
CBD is known as a safe and natural part of the phytocannabinoid system with virtually zero deaths associated with its use. Research has rated CBD as the least dangerous substance when compared to substances such as alcohol and nicotine in regard to toxicity. The known risks associated with CBD use are most often related to the elevation of THC content above the definition of hemp when the THC level goes above 0.3% by dry weight and is then known as medical cannabis.
Dementia is a term to describe loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life and our mental health. It is clear that the proportion of older people in the population 70+ creates an increasing rise in the number of people developing or acquiring dementia. The number of people with dementia is expected to rise globally from current day 55 million patients to 78 million people by the year 2030. Boomers in America make up at least 25% of the 70+ population in every state in the United States except one.
Dementia and the other neurological diseases are more of a threat than reality. But it scares most people because of the long-term and dire consequences of dementia for the patient and the caregiver. One in seven Americans, about 14.2% over the age of 70, will have dementia affecting their mental health.
There are many different forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s dementia is the most common form and may contribute to 60 to 70% of the cases. Dementia can also develop after strokes, in certain types of infections, HIV, alcohol abuse, and repeated physical trauma as in sports which has become to be known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalitis (CTE), and nutritional deficiencies.
Cause and Effect:
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction (Sir Isaac Newton, 1643-1727). The brain and the heart use most of the mitochondrial energy in order to operate on a daily basis. The byproduct of this energy formation is called oxidative stress and produces free radicals. These substances have to be eliminated from the brain in order for the brain to continue to function in its highest capacity.
Major bleeds and major infections can be space occupying lesions that can do permanent damage to the brain and affect our mental health. Many times, concussions secondary to a fall or striking the head can go unnoticed and can have serious consequences unless it is recognized and treated.
As previously mentioned above, back in 1999, four NIH researchers found that the cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD) was capable of getting rid of these byproducts from the brain in addition to the need for at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Sleep time needs to clean the brain.
CBD was also found to be neuroproliferative as well as neuroprotective. However, the public was not fully informed of these groundbreaking revelations because of cannabis prohibition that had been in effect for almost 30 years. It would take another 20 years, to the year 2018 when hemp, for the first time, was classified as legal.
Port of Entry
This port of entry has its advantages and disadvantages: Sublingual (under the tongue) or buccal (cheeks) forms of drugs have these advantages. Because the medication absorbs quickly, these types of administration can be important during emergencies when you need the drug to work right away, such as during a heart attack.
This highly vascular area under the tongue has become a common conduit and port of entry into the systemic vascular system for the administration of medication. It is the most common route to administer nitroglycerin carrying the urgency of getting life-saving medicines to the target organ, the heart, in a time of need.
Medications that are administered sublingually dissolve under the tongue, without chewing or swallowing. Absorption is very quick, and higher drug levels are achieved in the bloodstream by sublingual routes than by oral routes because the sublingual route avoids first-pass (first pass effect) metabolism by the liver. Sublingual vitamins, which are meant to be taken by dissolving the tab under your tongue, are growing in popularity. They work because the nutrient is absorbed under the tongue and enters the bloodstream directly without having to go through the gastrointestinal tract.
When it comes to VitaminCBD™ which is a natural food supplement, it is in our best interest to get the maximum absorption, and as quickly as possible. This is why we suggest you hold the oil under the tongue for 60 seconds before swallowing. Truth be known, the longer you can hold it under the tongue, the better the absorption will be.
Sublingual supplements are better for: People who have difficulty swallowing capsules or tablets (including children and the elderly); rapid absorption and quick distribution of nutrient; delivery of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12 and VitaminCBD™. Most people are not taking their CBD correctly. When CBD is swallowed, the uptake of this important phytonutrient is broken down by the stomach and liver and the absorption is only about 5%. “Don’t Ask, You Don’t Know”.
The EI Effect
Emotional health supports emotional intelligence. We want to take one very simple concept of health and make sure that we include the mental peace as well as the physical piece of health. In mental health, there is something called emotional health or emotional wellness. There are many factors that affect both our physical and mental health.
Emotional wellness was the subject of a recent study done out of Brazil. This was a clinical trial that showed that cannabis CBD therapy increased and improved emotional wellness. There are multiple studies at different universities and in the literature about emotional wellness studies and cannabis. This study out of Brazil was a clinical trial, showing that CBD is reaching the pinnacle necessary to do larger studies, showing significant clinical improvements in emotional health which is good mental health.
We need more clinical studies, no doubt, but the only point I am making today with this recent clinical trial is that you have to have emotional wellness in order to have emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence basically has four characteristics and is felt to be as important or more important than IQ.
The four categories that make up emotional intelligence are: Self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills. It is clear that all of the previous three are incorporated into the fourth for execution purposes. How we handle our problems, our families, and our loved ones more than likely depends on all four of these categories. This is why we think emotional intelligence is so very important.
