Stocks end mostly lower, but Dow rises to record
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday, but the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI JIA) staged a turnaround moments before the closing bell and managed to edge into positive territory to an all-time high. The Dow gained 2.77 points, or 0.02%, to end at 14,450.06, rising for an eighth session in a row — its longest winning streak since February 2011. But the S&P 500 index (SNC:SPX) , a broader stock-market gauge, fell 3.74 points, or 0.2%, to 1,552.48, snapping a seven-session winning streak. Technology and financials were the biggest decliners among its 10 major industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite index (NASDAQ:COMP) dropped 10.55 points, or 0.3%, to 3,242.32.
