Chronic pain can subside with the help of an electromagnetic field
Even the ancient Romans treated chronic pain with electricity – namely, an electric eel. After all, the human nervous system is powered by electricity, and electricity can also be used to influence it. It is possible to relieve chronic pain with electromagnetic energy pulses, which are used to accustom the central nervous system to react to stimuli normally.
Pain that persists for a long time can cause changes in the spinal cord, as a result of which the nerves that transmit painless sensations also begin to transmit pain. The central nervous system is sensitized to even normal stimuli as pain, and a person is plagued by chronic pain.
In this situation, pulsed shortwave therapy, or PSWT, can help. The nervous system is accustomed to stimuli with the help of an electromagnetic field. Completely painless treatment causes the nervous system to raise the pain threshold.
The U.S. Pain Foundation recently published an article on the chronicity of pain and treatment with a PSWT device on its website. The article is quite scientific but interesting, so we translated it into Finnish for the readers of our blog.
Article Summary
Many chronic pains can be considered a syndrome caused by sensitization or hypersensitivity of the central nervous system. Over time, physical changes occur, with the nerves that usually transmit painless sensations becoming part of the pain pathway, which in turn lowers the pain threshold.
The effectiveness of current drug therapies is limited, as they do not correct changes that cause sensitization of the central nervous system.
Traditional neurostimulators can relieve acute pain by masking it. However, it often requires surgical intervention, so the duration of treatment is limited.
Pulsed Shortwave Therapy (PSWT), on the other hand, produces neuromodulation (regulation of nervous system activity) in high-frequency electromagnetic fields without surgical intervention or uncomfortable sensations.
PSWT relieves pain by reversing central nervous system sensitization and raising the pain threshold.
Clinical trials with commercially available PSWT devices show that they can significantly relieve both chronic pain and acute pain, reducing the risk of pain becoming chronic.
PSWT treatment can usually be given on an ongoing basis.
