Dem Mayor in D.C. Declares Public Emergency Thanks to Influx of Migrants From Texas

Earlier this year, Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott vowed to share the burden of having to deal with the influx of millions of illegal migrants into his state with Democrat-run “sanctuary cities,” and by all measures, his effort has been a success.

In fact, his state has bussed so many migrants to the nation’s capital that Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has had to declare a public emergency, reports noted this week.

“We’re putting in place a framework that would allow us to have a coordinated response with our partners,” Bowser said Thursday, according to CNN. “This will include a program to meet all buses, and given that most people will move on, our primary focus is to make sure we have a humane, efficient, welcome process that will allow people to move on to their final destination.

“Regardless of the federal response — which I think has been lacking in some respects — that the District of Columbia would continue to work with partners to advance what we need and ensure our systems in D.C. are not broken by a crisis that is certainly not of our making,” the Democrat mayor added.

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott started busing migrants to the nation’s capital in April to protest the Biden administration’s immigration policies. Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, another Republican, have so far sent hundreds of buses to DC, and neither have expressed any intention of stopping.

As of Thursday, the Texas governor’s office had sent more than 7,900 migrants on over 190 buses to the District, more than 2,200 migrants on over 40 buses to New York City, and more than 300 migrants on over five buses to Chicago.

A state government spreadsheet obtained by CNN through a Freedom of Information Act request shows that, as of August 9, Texas has paid $12,707,720.92 to Wynne Transportation, the charter service that is taking migrants to New York and DC.

Bowser, along with NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, have criticized Abbott and Ducey for bussing migrants to their cities, complaints that Abbott has cited as hypocritical.

In an op-ed published by the New York Post, Abbott said that Adams, for instance, was all talk when it came to “open borders.”

Texas has also sent migrants to New York City and Chicago, much to the chagrin of the Democratic mayors in those cities.

In addition to Texas, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, also a Republican, has also been bussing migrants out of the state, but he has only sent them to Washington, D.C.

“Mayor Adams likes to pat himself on the back for welcoming migrants with open arms to his sanctuary city. That is, until he actually has to follow through on those lofty promises,” Abbott began. “Adams talked the talk about being a sanctuary city — welcoming illegal immigrants into the Big Apple with warm hospitality. Talk is cheap. When pressed into fulfilling such ill-considered policies, he wants to condemn anyone who is pressing him to walk the walk.”

He also said that many of Adams’ accusations regarding Abbott’s bussing of migrants to his city are false, noting that each migrant has signed an agreement to board a New York-bound bus and all are taken care of on the journey.

“Worst of all is Adams’ hypocrisy. He now complains that he and New York City are overwhelmed by migrants to such an extent that he demands federal help and discourages Texas from sending more buses to his city. Yet he remained silent when President Biden flew migrants into New York, many of whom ended up in New York City,” Abbott wrote.

“Adams — just like many Americans — is either unaware or refuses to acknowledge that the open-border policies he supports and Biden imposed funnel billions of dollars to the drug cartels that profit off of everyone crossing the border illegally,” he added.
