Frequency of Bowel Movement Could Predict Heart Attack Risk

Heart attacks are medical emergencies that occur when a blood clot hinders blood flow to an individual’s heart. Signs that you may be experiencing a heart attack include shortness of breath, chest pain and pain that travels through your body.

A heart attack can be caused by a number of factors, including coronary heart disease. This illness is a major cause of death around the globe and is caused by a build-up of fatty substances in the arterial walls interrupting or blocking the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart.

While heart disease, which is a heart attack precursor, is brought about by poor lifestyle decisions, researchers have found that how often an individual empties their bowels may forecast their future risk of experiencing a heart attack.

For their study, the researchers assessed the link between major vascular and nonvascular illnesses outside the digestive system and frequency of bowel movements. They studied data obtained from the China Kadoorie Biobank, which had enrolled participants from different geographically diverse areas in China, in the period between 2004 and 2008. The participants involved in the study were all between 30 and 79 years of age with no history of stroke, heart disease or cancer. Each of them was followed up with for at least a decade.

The researchers discovered that the participants who had bowel movements more than once daily had a heightened risk of coronary heart disease, in comparison to the study’s reference group, which only relived their bowels once daily.

The researchers wrote that this trend was also observed with other chronic complications, including chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure.

They also observed that relieving one’s bowels less than three times weekly was linked to a heightened risk of chronic kidney disease, ischaemic stroke, major coronary events and coronary heart disease.

The investigators’ findings aren’t surprising, especially when one considers that constipation is one of the cardiovascular disease risks. Patients with cardiovascular illnesses are often constipated. This is usually caused by reduced mobility, reduced intake of fluids, loss of appetite, prescribed medications and decreased flow of blood to an individual’s digestive tract.

Researchers estimate that over one-half of the individuals with heart failure experience issues such as urge incontinence.

In their conclusion, the researchers stated that an individual’s frequency of bowel movements was linked to future risks of a range of nonvascular and vascular illnesses, noting that integrating health counseling and bowel movement frequency assessment into primary care needed to be considered.

With entities such as HeartBeam Inc. (NASDAQ: BEAT) commercializing superior heart attack detection technologies, these conditions may adversely affect fewer people as timely detection is made possible and early treatment commences.
