The 10 commandments are Jewish Law ~ Before Christ ~ given to Moses by GOD.
John 3:16 encapsulates the New Testament teachings...aka the savior of man. Question would be also how much tinkering between 1AD and let's say 800 AD was done. Lots of differing opinions and translations on that.
Other question is Why did jews no except Christ as their savior? Simplest answer. By Jewish standards. He was not a Jew. RUTH was a Moabite or gentile. Jews determine your Jewishness via the mother's bloodlines.
Being Christian means, you accept Christ as your savior. PERIOD!!
Being a good Christian means you adhere to the teachings. This doesn't necessarily mean the Pharisaical Laws so churches insist you must keep.
