Pretty basic stuff here you have forgotten.
Presidents are hired and fired by the Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors is elected by the stockholders. (Sometimes Board members are initially appointed by the other Board members, but ultimately, they are subject to a vote of the shareholders).
If he does well, he will be elevated with the additional responsibilities/positions of CEO and maybe a Board position.
If he does not do well, he will be either fired by the Board of Directors or given more time by the Board of Directors.
However, the shareholders will not be directly involved in this decision.
