Background on the 2016 gold dredging in the Bear
Post# of 2057
A seaman, Paul Pacheco, was injured on July 3rd, 2016 while transferring between the" North Pacific Gold" gold dredge vessel and the "NPG Research" , a small survey vessel also owned by North Pacific. Paul Jr was Captain on the NP Gold and Paul III on the NPG Research. It occurred in rough seas following problems on board the North Pacific Gold in waters west of Nome. The seaman sustained an injury and a personal injury suit under the Jones Act followed in Alaska District Court against Paul Jr and Paul III and North Pacific Gold, Inc.
Case was filed in October 2016 and settled in 2018. Paul Sr and Mexus were not named or involved. Suit settled before trial and the settlement was not disclosed.
From the original filing in Alaska District Court, Case No. 3:16-cv-00237 HRH
"As the NPG RESEARCH accelerated alongside the NORTH PACIFIC GOLD, a piece of equipment on the NORTH PACIFIC GOLD struck Plaintiff."
Excerpts and paraphrases follow: ...plaintiff incurred injury to his abdomen, pelvis/hip and other body parts. Seaman Pacheco spent a month in a Medical Center in Anchorage.

This was before the abandonment and later scraping of the North Pacific Gold in the Homer Harbor.
Anybody for a little joy ride on the new vessel? I'll pass. Starting out in August is well beyond the normal start of the dredging season. I do hope all remain safe whenever they launch operations.
