Is It Safe to Smoke DMT? DMT is said to be one
Post# of 341
DMT is said to be one of the most potent hallucinogens known to man. Smoking this drug, which is also called the spirit molecule, can cause a range of hallucinations, including visions of alien landscapes, temples, clowns, fairies, sprites, elves and goddesses.
Nick Sand, an underground chemist, discovered in the 1960s that DMT was hallucinogenic when smoked, noting that what the drug opened humans up to was profound. In the 1990s, the drug’s reputation was changed when Terence McKenna, a psychedelic philosopher and author, lectured audiences about the drug’s hyperspaces. This was soon followed by a book on DMT, which was published by Rick Strassman, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry.
Currently, researchers are studying the drug for its therapeutic potential in treating traumatic brain injuries, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. However, even as interest in the drug increases, it remains unclear whether it is safe for consumption through smoking.
Thus far, researchers have discovered that DMT occurs naturally in many animals and plants, including in the human nervous system. However, they note that its presence in the human body doesn’t mean it’s safe to consume.
They have also found that the drug resembles the serotonin molecule closely, noting that the reaction of an individual’s body to the presence of DMT is akin to a neurotoxin’s presence. Researchers explain that the drug is usually present in very small quantities in the body, as its build-up interferes with the serotonin system and causes hallucinations and disorientation, which points to it not being safe for consumption.
Additionally, studies have found that individuals with a history of cardiac abnormalities, heart disease and high blood pressure should refrain from consuming DMT, lest they risk a trip to the ER.
Furthermore, studies have found that if you consume too much vaporized DMT, the drug may interfere with your serotonin system, leading to the serotonin syndrome. This syndrome is brought about by too much serotonin in an individual’s blood stream and is known to cause changes in blood pressure as well as rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, confusion and agitation.
When serotonin levels are extremely high in the body, individuals may experience tremors, blackouts, vomiting, a high fever, twitching and loss of muscle control. In severe cases, inhaled DMT can even cause convulsions and seizures. This is especially likely when individuals have consumed very high doses of vaporized DMT.
Various reports also show that frequent use of DMT can cause paranoia, mania, delusions, psychosis and detachment from reality. Researchers note that mixing other substances with DMT heightens the potential for fatality.
These possible shortcomings of several psychedelic compounds explain why companies such as Cybin Inc. (NYSE American: CYBN) (NEO: CYBN) are developing medicinal formulations to be administered in a clinical setting only.
