Syndrome, which caused partial paralysis in his face — it turns out RHS is a known vaccine side effect . Whoops!
“As you can see, this eye is not blinking,” Bieber said in a video revealing his condition. “I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move.”
Hours later, Bieber added, “[It’s] been getting progressively harder to eat, which has been extremely frustrating. Please pray for me.”
According to WebMD, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a “rare disease that occurs when a shingles outbreak attacks facial nerves close to one of your ears.”
“The disease is in the same family of viruses that causes chickenpox: the varicella-zoster virus.”
Given RHS’s relation to shingles, it’s even rarer for a young, healthy man in his 20s to come down with RHS.
Emergency room physician Dr. Kashif Pirzada confirmed this in an interview with CTV News on Friday, adding, “Usually it affects people with compromised immune systems and people who are older. It can be pretty disabling; it can cause your voice to change. It can cause vertigo, dizziness, balance issues, and hearing issues.”
It turns out, though, that RHS is one of the many adverse reactions that have been documented following inoculation with the COVID vaccine.
As per a report published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information on September 20, 2021, “We recently assessed a female patient at our centre who exhibited symptoms consistent with Ramsay-Hunt syndrome following administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. At the time of writing, we are not aware of any other published cases of a similar nature, just herpes zoster reactivation in other locations and Bell’s palsy, which is why we wanted to warn of this possibility. Our patient is a 78-year-old woman with a history of childhood poliomyelitis with sequelae in the lower limbs, as well as untreated arterial hypertension.”
“Three days after receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech), she began to experience instability, general malaise, nausea and severe pain in the external auditory canal and right half of the cranium.”
However, this wouldn’t be the only time doctors diagnosed someone with RHS following inoculation with the COVID vaccine.
According to a report published in the BMJ Postgraduate Medical Journal, “We recently diagnosed Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) in a 37-year-old previously healthy man. Two days after his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) vaccine, he noticed fever and a pain in the right ear. Vesicles were then developed in his right ear and canal, together with vertigo, tinnitus and loss of hearing.”
“He complained of facial palsy, tongue numbness and dysgeusia. On examination, he had grade 4 right facial nerve palsy of the lower motor neuron type with right sensorineural hearing loss.”
Additionally, a search on OpenVaers for “Ramsay Hunt Syndrome” brings up six pages and 72 results of doctors suspecting patients to have come down with RHS following the COVID jab.
While Bieber hasn’t publicly disclosed his vaccination status, given his ability to freely travel throughout the pandemic and the fact he requires fans to be fully vaccinated to attend his concerts, the general consensus is that he — as well as his wife who recently had heart surgery after developing life-threatening blood clots — has received the COVID vaccine.
