Almost half of President Joe Biden’s current 22.2 million followers on Twitter are fake accounts, according to an audit tool provided by software company SparkToro.
SparkToro’s tool found that 49.3 percent of accounts following the official @POTUS Twitter account are “fake followers” based on analysis of a number of factors, including location issues, default profile images and new users.
The number of bot accounts on Twitter is now a current point of contention in Elon Musk’s proposed $44 billion takeover.
Musk tweeted that Twitter misled him by claiming just five percent of the accounts on the platform were bots, and that the deal cannot move forward until the company can substantiate this claim.
“My offer was based on Twitter’s SEC filings being accurate,” Musk posted on social media. “Yesterday, Twitter’s CEO publicly refused to show proof of <5%. This deal cannot move forward until he does.”
Musk claimed that his sample survey found over 20 percent spam accounts.
Some think Musk is looking for a way to back out of the deal.
Others believe Musk is trying to negotiate down the purchase price.
Musk’s purchase of Twitter became a major political story, as his stated goal was to turn it into a free speech platform.
