Officials find body of Texas Guardsman who drowned trying to save migrants in Rio Grande River
The body of a Texas National Guard member who went missing after going into the river along the U.S.-Mexico border to help two migrants who appeared to be drowning has been found, Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday. The Texas Military Department previously identified the Guard member as Specialist Bishop E. Evans, 22, from Arlington.
"We are heartbroken to learn of the death of SPC Bishop E. Evans who was reported missing in Eagle Pass on Friday," Abbott said. "I thank the members of the Texas National Guard, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Border Patrol, and local law enforcement for working around the clock to locate this soldier. "
Evans went missing on Friday as he jumped into the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass along the U.S.-Mexico border in a section of the river known to have strong currents.
