For around two years Democrats have been preaching to the rest of the nation that people need to wear a mask, but it is not advice they follow all the time.
A group of House Democrats who attended a retreat together, maskless, where President Joe Biden spoke, reported that they had tested positive for COVID, The Daily Mail reported.
Another two members who did not attend the retreat also tested positive after the House got rid of its mask mandate.
Among those reporting positing positive cases were senior members of the caucus, including powerful House Appropriations Committee chairwoman Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn), 79.
Others included impeachment managers Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), 74, and Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), 62.
Masks were optional at the event, which came during a time of lessening covid restrictions.
“While I tested negative earlier this week, today I tested positive for COVID-19. Thankfully, I am only experiencing mild symptoms & am grateful for the protection that comes from being vaccinated & boosted. I encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated and get boosted,” Rep. DeLauro said.
“While I was looking forward to marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade & had plans to celebrate our community projects & all that we accomplished in the federal spending package, I’ll be isolating & working remotely from my home in New Haven. My office remains fully operational,” she said.
“As part of regular protocol after travel, I tested for COVID-19 this morning & got a positive result (after testing negative earlier this week). Thanks to protections from being vaccinated & boosted, I’m grateful to only be experiencing mild symptoms,” Rep. Lofgren said.
“In accordance w/@CDCgov & Office of the Attending Physician’s guidelines, I’m isolating & working remotely. My offices in DC & San Jose will also shift to full remote work for the week & remain fully operational,” she said.
Also testing positive was Washington Rep. Kim Schreier.
“After testing negative multiple times last week, including yesterday, this morning I woke up with mild cold symptoms and have tested positive for Covid. I’ll be working from home this week and my offices remain open,” she said.
“This is a good reminder to all of us that the virus is still here, but I have great peace of mind knowing that I’ve been double vaccinated and received my booster. If you haven’t gotten your vaccine or booster yet, go get yours today,” she said.
Unrelated to the trip, it was announced that Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, tested positive for COVID, NBC News reported.
“Earlier today, the Second Gentleman tested positive for COVID-19,” the Vice President’s deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh, said. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Vice President will not participate in tonight’s event [on Equal Pay Day]. The Vice President tested negative for COVID-19 today and will continue to test.”
“I tested positive for COVID. My symptoms are mild and I’m grateful to be both vaccinated and boosted. If you have yet to get vaccinated and boosted, please don’t wait,” the second gentlemen said.
They join another prominent Democrat, former President Obama, who also tested positive this week.
“I just tested positive for COVID. I’ve had a scratchy throat for a couple days, but am feeling fine otherwise. Michelle and I are grateful to be vaccinated and boosted, and she has tested negative. It’s a reminder to get vaccinated if you haven’t already, even as cases go down,” the former president said on Twitter.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the president tested negative.
“We noticed the President, when he came on stage today at the Marriott, had a mask on. Is that something he has been advised to do, or is that something he just feels more comfortable doing?” a reporter said.
“Often he does that when it’s required by a specific event, as he did when he went to Texas last week. I can certainly check on that. He was tested yesterday and tested negative,” the press secretary said.
