A Milwaukee spice company is peppering its remaining customers with requests to buy gift cards after its anti-Republican ad campaign left a bad taste in a lot of mouths.

Penzeys Spices, which sells its goods mostly online and via mail order, saw its sales plunge after it ran a "Republicans Are Racist" sale on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. On Friday, the company's namesake boss asked for help boosting the company's finances.

"After starting the year with All Republicans are Republicans and following up with Republicans are Racists we've set a nice little Boycott Penzeys! surge in motion," Bill Penzey, CEO of the Milwaukee-based company, wrote in an email. "It certainly wasn't unsuspected, but if it's within your means, you picking up a small stack of Gift Cards would help."

The Jan. 14 Penzeys promotion went on to accuse Republicans of opposing Black Lives Matter's success "in moving America towards greater equality for Black people, in many ways the first real success since the time of Dr. King," during the protests that took place coast-to-coast following the death of George Floyd in 2020.

Penzey turned up the heat by claiming Republicans across the board are so inherently racist that they fantasized about killing black people.

Penzey said Friday that while his anti-Republican rant cost him 40,005 mail-order subscribers, it brought in 30,000 new ones.

"We are still down about 10,000. Please help."

"If you can't even begin to fathom how to 'compromise' with January 6th, or the Republican vaccine lies needlessly killing 10,000 Americans every week, if you have no desire to become half-way racist, and if their intent is to destroy our climate for one thousands years to come doesn't have you asking: 'What if we just destroyed it for five-hundred years instead?' we would be better off with you on this Voice of Cooking email list," he wrote.

Penzey has never shied away from making political statements and for decades has used his company's catalog as a megaphone.

Penzey has taken aim at urban white flight, low teacher pay, the use of Native American iconography in sports, as well as former President Donald Trump.

After the 2016 election, Penzeys sent an email to customers, including Trump supporters, that declared, "You just voted for an openly racist candidate for the presidency of the United States of America."
