The reports I saw described omicron as entering cells after first becoming encapsulated in the cell membrane and then the lipid-encapsulated omicron diffuses into the cytplasm.
Delta, on the other hand, employs the spike proten to directly inject ran covid RNA into the cytoplasm.
As a result of these different mecanisms of action, omicron and delta infect different tissues.
Omicron infects upper respiratory and Delta infects deep lung tissue cells.
The reason that Omicron is milder is because it is infecting different cells.
Of course these cells could be subject to cytokine storm, but I have not heard of any cytokine storm in an Omicron patient, but I didn't make any effort to look for remports of cytokine storm in Omicron patients.
My suspicion is that in Cytodyn clinical trials leronlimab will be limited to treatment of patients with cytokine storm.
