Tinnitus is one of those conditions like fibromyalgia where it's not always easy to pinpoint why you have it. Tinnitus happens a lot in older folks due to hearing loss, which is why something like 80% of tinnitus cases resolve when hearing aids are introduced. With that single fact in mind, if you and your wife are older, maybe what occurred is covid induced your tinnitus but it's actually a result of an underlying hearing loss that hasn't been addressed yet.

But regardless of that theory, here's what I would suggest. Take your wife and have yourselves checked out by an audiologist that specializes in Tinnitus. Hearing exams are routinely free of charge and it's a good idea to get that checked regardless. But even if you don't have hearing loss their are a variety of ways (devices) that can help. There typically isn't a drug you can take unless it's caused by an underlying condition that does have a drug available to treat it. Hearing aids have some of these types of programs built in so if you do have hearing loss (and it takes most people 7-10 years to admit it fully and actually seek help for it) you can tackle both issues at once. An Audiologist will have some options for you even if you don't have hearing loss.

The hard part is finding one that actually treats tinnitus and doesn't just throw it out there on their website when their only treatment is turning on the tinnitus function in their hearing aids. And make sure it's an audiologist. There are many folks licensed to run a hearing evaluation and fit you for hearing aids, but they aren't allowed or qualified to do more diagnostic stuff and that may be something you need. Just fine if they're good and you just need hearing aids, but not the right choice if it's more technical than that. Shoot me a PM if you want some help or have any other questions.
