Absolutely right. I misread the line so I thought it read "... she died shortly after starting treatment."
That said, does the article give you the idea that the treatment would have worked? It is so busy telling you that Patterson is saying how wonderful the woman's recover is going to be even though she hasn't had Leron yet -- it wants you to think that Patterson is spouting nonsense.
Of course sometimes he is.
