First, you have no idea on how to build a company from a small handful of people to a large company in less than a year. it is a struggle to say the least when the majority of your employees have been hired in the last 6-8 months and have to become a successful operating unit. yes its extremely expensive but the challenges of creating one culture and operating efficiently in a very short time is extremely difficult.
second i have been a COO of a fast growing company. it is very challenging. you dont hire a lot of sales people and all of a sudden they are very effective. its takes a year to make a rep successful selling your product , especially in this business. the reps from the other companies from big pharma are tough to compete with when you are trying to get reps up to speed on your drug. this is not a small task. you actually lose momentum during this period regardless of how good your drug is.
i can run a list as long as your arm on the reasons not to do this including the current skillsets of management. It takes a lot of business savvy: not science savvy to pull it off.
We differ in our opinion. thats fine. But i think you are looking at sheer sales dollars and those wont come to fruition without a pharma partner with a lot of reps ready and who have the sales relationships already to pull it off. its difficult to say the least. We can have this disucssion a year from now when we actually have a product out the door . but i guarantee you, Dr. Kelly doesnt want to build his own sales team
