Are Celebrities Helping or Hindering Psychedelics Reform Movement?

The psychedelic renaissance has greatly increased the popularity of psychedelic substances as more research on these substances reveals the numerous benefits they possess. For instance, research has found that psilocybin may be used in the treatment of anxiety while MDMA could be used to manage post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the recent past, we have also seen celebrities such as Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Megan Fox and Will Smith speak openly about the use of psychedelics and how the substances have assisted them in overcoming mental health issues. In addition, they revealed how the substances had improved their creative pursuits.

The boost in creativity has been backed by different studies, with a 2018 study finding that microdoses of psychedelic truffles facilitated an increase in divergent thinking capabilities. Researchers note that the balance between convergent thinking and divergent thinking is the foundation for creativity.

However, as the popularity of these substances increases and media coverage grows, we can’t help but wonder whether influential figures are harming or helping the psychedelic movement.

Well, we know that celebrities in popular culture such as sports and entertainment have the power to influence the behavior and attitudes of individuals who identify with them. We have also observed firsthand how these well-known individuals can leverage their influence when endorsing services and products or advocating for political or social change.

Todd Shapiro, CEO and cofounder of Red Light Holland, a magic truffle company, believes that celebrities talking about their psychedelic experiences is good because it helps get invaluable information out. In an interview, Shapiro explained that while pure influence from celebrities wasn’t ideal, it was important from an education point of view. This, he said, was because well-known people opening up and discussing their struggles and how they had used psychedelics to help them would kick-start this important conversation.

Natalie Lyla Ginsberg, the Global Impact Officer at MAPS, agrees with this, noting that celebrities using their platforms to discuss their psychedelic experiences is useful. Ginsberg explained more people speaking honestly and openly about their experiences with psychedelics would be good, highlighting that talking about bad trips in particular was powerful. This, she said, was because people’s curiosity was increasing and hearing about different experiences would offer them more insights into psychedelic experiences.

However, Ginsberg also recognized that harm could be caused by individuals who have large platforms advocating for dangerous behaviors.

Nevertheless, science is bound to prevail in shaping societal attitudes towards psychedelics, and the work being done by companies such as Mydecine Innovations Group Inc. (NEO: MYCO) (OTC: MYCOF) could prove to be the tipping point in driving psychedelic policy reform.
