420 with CNW — Having the Marijuana Munchies? Here’s Why

Cannabis has grown in popularity as more states legalize the herb for recreational and/or medical use. The herb can be consumed in different ways, with the most common methods being through edibles and smoking. Most users usually like to have access to their favorite snacks or meals for consumption after a successful smoking session. This is mainly because of the munchies.

While the term munchies is familiar to most, not many know why munchies occur. Today, we look at a couple of factors that can be used to explain why you get munchies after consuming cannabis.

Did you know that inadequate sleep gives rise to the munchies?

How, you might ask? Well, various studies have shown that a poor sleep schedule causes an increase in appetite.

In one study, researchers explained that lack of adequate sleep caused changes in food intake, biasing an individual’s food choices toward options that were more energy dense, without modifying total calorie intake. They added that their results, which focused on the impact of sleep deprivation on the brain, suggested that neural processing of odors was amplified in primary olfactory areas in the brain after sleep restriction.

This means that a full night’s rest may help prevent the munchies.

Additionally, research has also found that THC stimulates the olfactory bulb in a mice’s brain, which causes them to eat more than they normal would. The researchers hypothesize that this also happens in humans.

Data suggests that THC stimulates receptors in the hypothalamus, which causes a hormone known as gherlin to be produced. This hormone regulates hunger.

In addition, cannabis reduces an individual’s inhibitions. The substance causes the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is linked to pleasurable sensations. While there are many benefits to this neurotransmitter, it can also lower an individual’s inhibitions. Dopamine is known to control the pleasure and reward centers in an individual’s brain, which means that once enough THC is consumed, one may find it almost impossible to say no when it comes to eating a favorite meal.

This is why researchers believe that reduced inhibitions have a significant effect on an individual’s cravings and may result in the consumption of foods that they normally wouldn’t consume.

Despite being a tad inconvenient, munchies are no longer a mystery. The next time you have a smoking session with your friends followed by the munchies, you now have an explanation. These sessions are likely to occur more often in areas where cannabis is legal and companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) operate.
