As a teenager in Madison WI I trapped chipmunks and ground squirrels in my back yard and kept 15 or so in a 3'x3'x3' 1/2" hardware cloth cage I built for them, complete with a ramp to an upper shelf where they all congregated and actually got along together. Kept them for a number of months until late summer when I put the cage in the back seat of my mother's circa 1965 Chevy Impala. Unfortunately the cage somehow opened up before I got to a--similar to your--forested park about 5 miles away. Didn't get attacked by any of the loose animals but had quite a time shooing them from every nook, corner, and cranny of the car! Took a while to clean up the rear carseat but my mom was so overjoyed that I gave them their freedom miles away that she really didn't mind at all!
We have lots of squirrels where we now live in Oregon's Willamette Valley and we have a love-hate relationship with them. They spend all spring and summer burying peanuts (fed to them by some idiotic neighbors) and then walnuts when they're available in the few trees around town. So we have holes all over our ~1/2 acre yard all year long as they initially bury and then retrieve the fruits of their labors. This year we had a pair of youngsters nesting in our 80 year old willow tree outside our corner kitchen windows and it was a lot of fun seeing them chasing one another up, down, and around the tree.
But I'm not missing them now since we're a week into a 6+ week stay in sunny, warm Bucerias, ~ a 20 minute drive N of Puerto Vallarta on Mexico's beautiful Banderas Bay!
And that's the last I'll post OT about furry creatures!!
