Study Finds That Holiday Season May Worsen Mental Health
A recent study conducted by the National Alliance of Mental Illness has found that symptoms of mental illness may worsen during the holiday season. Participants who were part of the study who suffered from various mental health conditions admitted that their conditions worsened during the holiday season.
Pamela Mairs, a licensed psychologist who was part of the study, stated that the coronavirus pandemic had on its own triggered increased mental health conditions in adults. She explained that hopelessness, fear about the future, anxiety, withdrawal and depression had been observed in adults.
The CDC recently released a guide for the holiday season, highlighting the importance of limiting the number of individuals and households gathered together. In the guide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discussed ways to navigate invitations of unvaccinated and vaccinated family members for gatherings during this season. The center also recommended that masks be worn by family members who weren’t fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
However, national data shows that most individuals will not heed this recommendation. For example, a poll conducted by the Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University that involved more than 2,000 participants found that only about 50% of hosts planned to ask their guests to wear masks. This number is a significant decrease from the 67% recorded at the height of the pandemic in 2020. Half of the 50% also revealed that they wouldn’t ask their guests whether they have been vaccinated.
Mairs called attention to the fact that pandemic fatigue was real, which was why individuals needed to ensure that their mental health was a top priority.
The CDC recommends that people avoid indoor spaces, which are highly crowded and/or have poor ventilation, this Thanksgiving season and as we move into the festive season. It highly recommends that individuals who are sick not attend any gatherings, noting that testing to confirm that one does not have the coronavirus prior to travel is crucial.
With regard to travelling, the CDC recommends that people only travel if necessary, adding that those who plan to travel should wear masks on public transportation and follow global travel recommendations.
Individuals with conditions that weaken their immune system are also advised to wear masks because they may not be afforded complete protection even if they are vaccinated and have received a booster shot. In addition, the guideline explicitly states that children aged two years and younger do not need to wear masks.
