If you're a scum manipulator, first you push the price down with lots of smaller trades, then when you have panicked the weak hands, you cover with larger trades at lower prices.
It was very noticeable that suddenly the number of shares on the bid would go from a couple thousand to many tens of thousands -- when the share price was near the lows.
