Does anyone really trust the infection and death rate figures coming from any country, but especially one in which the president is being cited for crimes against humanity by the country's legislature?

That's how you try to defuse the anger of people -- say that it isn't so bad and is getting better.
And if you don't think that it isn't happening everywhere, you're kidding yourself. Just look at India. And Florida, where they arrested someone for compiling ACTUAL statistics.
