420 with CNW — Must-Know Benefits of Diapers Made from Hemp

Until a couple of years ago, the cultivation and sale of hemp were outlawed in the United States. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, however, farmers can now grow hemp once their states or tribes opt into the hemp program and draft rules for the hemp market.

Hemp and marijuana are from the same family of plants with the caveat that hemp does not intoxicate users because it has limited amounts of THC, the chemical compound responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects. Despite this, hemp has enjoyed continued demand since commercial cultivation thanks to its wide variety of applications. Hemp has an almost unlimited range of uses, including rope, textiles, shoes, food, paper, and bioplastics, but I bet you’ve never heard of hemp diapers.

Hemp is known to make a durable fiber that can be spun into diapers that are vastly superior to what you would find on the market. Reusable diapers are extremely uncommon these days with more than 90% of American families using disposable diapers. With more than 4 million babies born in the U.S. every year, and families using up to 28 billion disposable diapers each year, the environmental impact of disposable diapers is catastrophic, especially since the diapers take roughly 100 years to fully break down; they also leach harmful chemicals into the ground. On the other hand, hemp diapers are wholly organic, can be reused, and are biodegradable, unlike the disposable varieties.

If Americans were to turn to reusable hemp diapers, the amount of waste material generated by the average American family, especially ones with newborn babies, would be significantly reduced. And since hemp diapers are extremely durable, they are stronger than traditional diapers and can last much longer. Once such a diaper is used, it can be easily cleaned without the need for expensive detergents, softener or bleach.

As such, hemp diapers are a completely organic, carbon-neutral alternative to traditional diapers. Diapers made from hemp also have antibacterial properties that make them resistant to a wide range of pathogenic bacteria. This makes them ideal for babies because they prevent the growth or spread of harmful bacteria from the waste material within the diapers.

Additionally, hemp diapers are more breathable compared to traditional disposable diapers, making them great for both the health of a baby’s skin as well as their comfort. Nonbreathable options often lead to diaper dermatitis and do not allow odors to escape, meaning a child may remain in a soiled diaper for some time before parents notice that a change is needed. The diapers are also water absorbent and are mold resistant, and have antimicrobial properties.

Hemp diapers are far superior to traditional options in many ways: they are more comfortable, resist the growth of bacteria and mold, and are easy on the environment. Only time will tell whether they will outpace disposable diapers that have now become the norm in America.

As hemp diapers make their way into the mainstream, hemp fabrics manufactured by companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) are widely available and offer a great way to appreciate the superiority of hemp clothing.
