My guess other than their solar panels, communications satellites are smaller than a dishwasher which is about 1 meter by 1 1/2 meters in today's world.
With the development of "The Last Mile Technology" and build up of the land based communications networks in fiber, WiMax tower's, regional communication hubs and super quantum computers. All you need is a instrument grid or Matrix to bounce the signal off of

My understanding it is also secure and can't be hacked or corrupted. WiMax tower's are laid out in a grid across most of the United States. So even if there were a NUC attack communications would stay up. With the number of satellites that are up. No other Government has the ability to disrupt that many satellites. Taking out a few has little effect.
By the way China, Russia, Europe and Middle East have sub 5G networks with limited infrastructures. They can be made to go dark in a flip of a switch, if they don't play nice. There Sub 5G only functions if allowed to.
