THEY MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR ALL OF US.
Warminster, Pennsylvania, United States Today, a patient made my day. But it wasn’t one of my current patients. It was someone that used the store I worked at as a technician and an intern, where I haven’t worked in years. But he still made my day.
I was at the gym today. I’ve been going somewhat frequently recently, so you see the same people in there most days. There was always a gentleman I thought I recognized, but I couldn’t place where I knew him. I just settled on the fact that I saw him at the gym a lot and that was why he was familiar.
Today, he actually approached me and said “how have you been Miss Pharmacist?” And it threw me! We got to talking as I realized he was someone who came to my old store that I was a technician at, where I worked for 7 years, to pick up for his mother-in-law. I always knew who he was when I saw him, and had the prescriptions ready without him even asking. He was always very kind in return. We chatted for a few moments and parted ways saying how nice it was to see each other.
I have been a pharmacist for about 3 years now, so it’s been 3 years since I have been at that location. Still, he remembered me. And it made my day.
Working in the community is not always easy. Many times, we are seen as just retail workers, and not as a healthcare service. Sometimes people are not very nice because they run out of refills, or their copays are high. And many times they take out those frustrations on us. Still, as retail pharmacists and technicians, we do everything we can to take care of our patients. And today was a little reminder to me that it is all worth it. Because we do make a difference in the lives of our patients, and they do remember.
