How to Keep an EV Trouble-Free

Thanks to more than a century of industrialization and human-caused global warming, zero-emission electric vehicles (“EVs”) are poised to become the dominant vehicles on our roads as large sections of the world grapple with extreme heat and blistering cold. Transportation accounts for a large percentage of total carbon emissions, making electric vehicles, which are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries rather than internal combustion engines, a great way to curb greenhouse emissions from the sector. However, EVs are an entirely different beast from the vehicles we have become accustomed to, and taking care of one will require a much more different approach compared to maintaining an ICE vehicle.

Electric vehicle battery packs are the largest, most expensive and most important component in any EV. Make sure the battery remains between 20%–80% of the charge as repeatedly letting it reach zero and charging it to 100% will degrade the battery. Additionally, avoid parking the EV overnight in extreme heat and cold because extreme temperatures will also damage the battery. If you can, park your vehicle in a garage or keep it covered when it’s not in use. You will also want to be aware that when it’s especially rainy, the moisture can short circuit your EV’s connection, so inspect the batteries and connections wires regularly.

Lubrication and oiling will be crucial if you want to keep your EV’s moving parts working smoothly. Consequently, you will have to keep a close eye on the oil and liquid levels to prevent too much wear and tear. The oil will offer lubrication and reduce friction between moving parts, and the coolant will regulate the battery’s temperature. You will also have to regularly top off brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid.

Parking will also affect an EV differently compared to a traditional vehicle. As we’ve said, extreme temperatures will degrade the battery, so if you can, always park indoors or keep your EV covered. You can also use sleep mode or shutdown mode when you park to ensure the car is completely switched off and isn’t draining the battery. Some EV owners will even disconnect their batteries if they plan on keeping the vehicle stationary for a while, ensuring the battery retains its charge.

Tires will determine your EV’s performance and efficiency so make sure you check tire pressure and condition on a regular basis. A tire with low pressure can be unsafe and will require more energy, thus reducing the total available range in many cases.

Finally, you will want to keep an eye on the power accessories, charger, air conditioning, power inverter and brakes to spot any wear and tear. If you have any trouble remembering any of this, you can also take your EV for maintenance by a professional every 18,000 miles.

Companies looking to enter into the EV space, such as Net Element (NASDAQ: NETE), are also determined to bring superior electric vehicle technologies into the market so that every motorist will receive the maximum bang for each buck they invest in electrified transport. All these efforts will make EVs even more appealing to the public.
