Electrify America Makes Locating EV Chargers Easie
Post# of 131
America’s electric vehicle (“EV”) segment has grown a great deal since Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) first released the Tesla Roadster, but insufficient public EV charging infrastructure remains one of the most significant hurdles to EV adoption. While there are more than 150,000 gas stations spread out across the country, there are only 50,000 EV chargers in the country, with an estimated 5,000 of them being Level 1 fast chargers. Consequently, any long journey using an EV requires extensive planning to ensure you have enough chargers along your route, especially if you plan on using fast chargers, which are in short supply.
In a move meant to make finding public charging stations easier and more convenient for EV drivers on the go, Electrify America has announced that it will add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Every electric vehicle will now be able to access the Electrify America app through the infotainment system, making the process quicker and much more convenient.
In the past, some EV drivers could not access the app through their vehicle’s infotainment system, forcing them to pull the app on a separate device, which involved pulling over and shutting down any apps that were already being used via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
Although Tesla has a network of more than 25,000 charging stations, it still hasn’t fully opened the network up to non-Tesla EVs yet. Consequently, the rest of the network is made of a mishmash of different providers, forcing EV drivers to install different EV charging apps so they can access stations, which makes finding compatible chargers while on the road quite a hassle. Electrify America’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity will make it easier for drivers to find compatible charging stations. Additionally, drivers will be able to view charging plans and start or stop a charging session remotely.
The nascent electric vehicle space currently has several charging companies, and as more drivers adopt EVs, this segment is bound to experience major growth. These companies are naturally scrambling to provide public charging infrastructure in a bid to capture the market while it’s still young, making features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support quite important.
On top of having an EV charging space filled with several different companies, each with a different mobile app, automakers are increasingly rolling out apps designed for use in the car’s infotainment system but that do not have mobile compatibility. Features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will help bridge this growing divide, allowing drivers to use the Electrify America app on their vehicle’s infotainment system, regardless of the make and model of the car.
The EV distribution efforts of such as DSG Global Inc. (OTCQB: DSGT) are likely to enjoy better success rates if potential buyers know they will easily find a charging station whose facilities are compatible with their vehicle model.
