If memory serves, an Ohm measurement was first used to standardize telegraph cables, helping to determine how far a communication would travel over a wire, an by extension how highly powered (voltage/amperage) the signal would need to be to reach it's ultimate destination. "Are you receiving?", in other words.
Today on a multi-meter, it's the setting you place the meter on to test for connectivity between two wires or variant parts of a supposed circuit, rather. "Are we connected?", In other words.
As a measurement of resistance over a metal wire (I assume Ohms can be used to test Optic cables, but not certain), they also tell us how far a message or signal will reach before it has been dissipated by resistance and will no longer travel forth. "You have not/will not receive the message", in other words. (Unless we increase the volts/amps, of course)
Resistance causes heat as a by-product, so If indeed Ohm is a female, I'm guessing she's pretty hot!
