Tomatoes, tomAHtoes. The certificates don't have the clients name on them and that's just how the brokers and DTCC like it. Makes it a lot easier for them to "balance the books" .

Yes Janice, I'm aware. It's a digital certificate. Neato. Without going into some ridiculous spiel, I'm sure you are capable of comprehending how digital things are easily exploited. With a paper certificate, those shares are literally off the market. With digital, that concept is more flexible. Lots of " loaning " can occur with the hope that the matter can be squared away without any feathers being ruffled.
The DRS system does NOTHING to change the practice of brokers loaning their clients shares out or using those shares to establish their own short positions.
