"A possible explanation - Mitochondria are cells that are essential in the conversion of glucose to energy."
Mitochondria are not cells. But yes, their role is energy conversion for the cells.
_______________
Since we're talking so much about evolution and mutation today, the Mitochondria mutate at a certain rate, and these mutations are passed down from mother to child. Therefore, the rate of mitochondrial mutations in a person is a clear-ish indicator of time and distance from the start of a new hominid species.
This is one way we can determine how far away and removed by generation each of us is from S Africa or Southern Asia, where homo home sapiens likely began concurrently. (apropos to today's discussion is that h.h.sapiens likely generated concurrently in two different locations - sound familiar?)
