LONDON (AP) — Charlie Watts, the drummer who provided the backbone of the Rolling Stones’ songs for more than half a century, has died, his publicist said. He was 80.
Bernard Doherty said Tuesday that Watts “passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.”
Doherty said: “Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”
Earlier this month, Watts said he was likely going to miss the band's upcoming tour so he could recover from "an unspecified medical procedure."
At the time, Aug. 4, a representative for Watts said the procedure was "completely successful" but Watts needs time to recuperate.
For once my timing has been a little off. I am working hard to get fully fit but I have today accepted on the advice of the experts that this will take a while,” Watts said Aug. 4.
Watts successfully underwent treatment for throat cancer in 2004. He was replaced by understudy Steve Jordan, who has played with Keith Richards for years.
The Stones are set to resume their No Filter tour with a stadium show on Sept. 26 in St. Louis.
