It doesn't just use proteins from the spike to train your immune system.
It ALSO uses a protein found on the UNCHANGING body of the virus. This would seem to indicate that any variants will be less likely to be able to evade your antibodies, because some of those antibodies will be targeting the body of the virus, no matter what the spike looks like.
Naturally the FDA threw every possible stumbling block in front of NVAX, which looked like it would be the FIRST vaccine available -- so that instead Pfizer would be the first.
Just one example: FDA decertified the manufacturing plant that NVAX was going to have their vaccine manufactured in. THEN, the FDA immediately certified that plant to make the Pfizer vaccine.
2 months later, when NVAX found a plant in S. Korea that would make it, the FDA refused to certify the factory, saying it was "too dangerous" for them to send ONE inspector over there -- to save potentially millions of lives. Oh, and that factory was already certified for other drug manufacturing.
